Event: International Conference on Photochemical Conversion of Solar Energy
Organised by: Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu
Key dates:
Fest dates: Mar 29-30 2010

Details: Solar energy is one of the major growth segments globally and 30% of all investments go into solar energy. With over 50,000 villages in India without electricity, solar power can be utilized to its maximum potential to meet rural electricity needs. Off grid photovoltaics technology deployment can be used for lighting and electrification, powering irrigation pumps, providing back-up power for the growing network of cell towers as well as other urban applications. The Indian Photovoltaics Program is at present one of the largest in the world.
The International Conference on Photochemical Conversion of Solar Energy is organized jointly by the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science & Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering of the Amrita School of Engineering in Coimbatore and International Experts from Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) & Swiss National Laboratory for Materials (EMPA).

The event is supported by Indian Society for Advancement of Materials and Process Engineering (As part of their Silver Jubilee Celebrations).

The 2009 Balzan prize winner, Prof. Dr. Michael Gratzel (EPFL), will give a distinguished lecture on his latest invention - development of the photovoltaic cells commonly known as Gratzel cells. The Gratzel cell uses dye molecules to capture sunlight and is an efficient and stable converter of sunlight into electricity.

BIOINFORMATICS AT KARUNYA UNIVERSITY :
Karunya University was founded with the noble vision to raise professionals and leaders of high academic calibre and unblemished character, nurtured with a strong motivation and commitment to serve humanity. It is located 25 kilometres away from Coimbatore in the very bosom of mother nature. The Department of Bioinformatics in Karunya University was started in the year 2005. The objective is to provide excellent teaching, learning, including practical training, research facilities and consultancy services in the frontier areas of Bioinformatics. The department is offering B.Tech, M.Tech,. M.Phil and Ph.D in Bioinformatics.
ABOUT THE TRAINING PROGRAM:
Research in the Structural Bioinformatics focuses on the recognition of proteins and small molecules. Studying protein-protein interactions is crucial for a better understanding of processes such as metabolic control, signal transduction and gene regulation, whereas the ability to dock small ligands (drug molecule) to proteins is the key to rational drug and vaccine design strategies. Structural bioinformatics also deals with computational methods to explore the relationship between structure and function in enzymes and proteins. Another area where Structural Bioinformatics deals is computer simulations which allow proteins to 'come alive' - that is, we can simulate the motions of proteins and use this to explore the relationship between (static) structure and dynamic function. This is relevant to a number of areas ranging from biomedicine to nanotechnology.
Recent advances of high throughput genome sequencing, digital imaging technologies, biocomputing and drug design, has made a tremendous impact on how biomedical research will be conducted towards the improvement of human health and prolonging of human life in the future.

NATIONAL SEMINAR ON ACHIEVING FOOD SECURITY IN TIMES OF CRISIS
AL PROCESSO'10

This information is brought to you by www.studentyuva.co.cc
Need of Food Preservation & Value Education
The food preservation and processing industry has now become more of a necessity than being a luxuary. It has an important role in the conservation and better utilisation of food products. In order to utilize the surplus during the season ,it is necessary to employ modern methods to extend the storage life for better distribution through processing and preservation for utilisation in the off season also to cater to the needs of the small scale and large scale sectors.
According to FAO with an estimated increase of 105 million hungry people in 2009, ther are now 1.02 billion malnourished people in the world , meaning that almost one sixth of all humanity is suffering from hunger. Both public and private investments are needed, more specifically through targeted public investment to encourage and facilitate private investment, especially by farmers themselves to overcome this global crisis. We have the technology know how to do something about alleviating the unger. So the latest non thermal technologies, value addition techniques and shelf life enhancement will reduce the food losses. Reducing the percentage of food loss means increasing the availability of te food produced.
Under this scenario, the Department of Food Processing & Engineering is organizing a National Seminar with the theme "Achieving Food Security in Times of Crisis"

Reinfo is the annual Civil Engineering festival of Kumaraguru College of Technology, Coimbatore.

Impossible!! This is one word that engineers believe does not exist!!! REINFO is for those engineers who do not believe in DOOM… Who never believe that the world ends at 2012 or at any other time in future. Who have the will and wish to compete. Sustainability is the key word for our generation. We are born to survive. Not to believe that we are going to end. Moon was the sole source of light after sunset, but the rational man who believed that light is possible invented light in the form of a lamp and in the form of a bulb!!!, claimed to be the most astounding invention of mankind. Some men believed, those rational, never say impossible men were called engineers. For those budding civil engineers of this generation, to showcase their talent, we provide the platform, REINFO 10, a national level civil engineering festival at KCT which has been producing engineers since 1984. The future lies in the hands of engineers who are striving to build green, sustainable infrastructure which complements the nature. The fight is no longer against the forces of nature. It is teaming with nature, for survival. The fittest men have survived and also saved others. Come show your fitness, your determination.Buckle up now! Get “REINFOED”!!!
