Need of Food Preservation & Value Education
The food preservation and processing industry has now become more of a necessity than being a luxuary. It has an important role in the conservation and better utilisation of food products. In order to utilize the surplus during the season ,it is necessary to employ modern methods to extend the storage life for better distribution through processing and preservation for utilisation in the off season also to cater to the needs of the small scale and large scale sectors.
According to FAO with an estimated increase of 105 million hungry people in 2009, ther are now 1.02 billion malnourished people in the world , meaning that almost one sixth of all humanity is suffering from hunger. Both public and private investments are needed, more specifically through targeted public investment to encourage and facilitate private investment, especially by farmers themselves to overcome this global crisis. We have the technology know how to do something about alleviating the unger. So the latest non thermal technologies, value addition techniques and shelf life enhancement will reduce the food losses. Reducing the percentage of food loss means increasing the availability of te food produced.
Under this scenario, the Department of Food Processing & Engineering is organizing a National Seminar with the theme "Achieving Food Security in Times of Crisis"
